1. What does the TANF tuition and fee exemption program provide?

The TANF exemption program provides an exemption from the payment of tuition and fees for up to one year (four consecutive semesters) for eligible college students.

2. Will the Educational Aide Exemption program pay my tuition and fees by the tuition due date?

If the Educational Aide application is complete and has been submitted early, then it may be available to pay tuition and fees by the tuition due date. Otherwise, the student will have to find an alternative method of paying for tuition/fees. Once the exemption has been approved, the student will be reimbursed and funds will be disbursed after the 12th class day during the Fall and Spring semesters and after the 4th class day during the Summer sessions. A check will be mailed to the address listed with the Office of Admissions and Records.

3. How do I apply for the Educational Aide exemption program?

Submit an application for the fall/spring semesters. The application can be downloaded at www.collegefortexans.com/formsapps/ and select Educational Aide. You can also contact the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board at 1-800-242-3062 x 6387 or at grantinfo@thecb.state.tx.us. (Summer applications are dependent on availability of funds).

4. Is there a time limit for the TANF tuition and fee exemption to be used?

The TANF tuition and fee exemption program must begin within 24 months of the student’s date of high school graduation and lasts for only up to one year.

5. How do I apply for the TANF tuition and fee exemption program?

To receive the benefit, the student needs to submit to the Student Financial Services Scholarship office a copy of the certificate indicating that they received Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) during the student’s senior year in high school (for at least 6 months). A copy of this certificate can be obtained through the local Department of Human Services eligibility office.
