How is it measured?
Here at UTPA, we measure satisfactory academic progress by students passing and completing a percentage of all their attempted hours (67% for undergraduate students and 75% for graduate students). Students can determine their passing percentage rate by dividing the number of hours passed and completed by the number of hours attempted. Attempted Hours include any non-passing grades and all courses that were started but not completed (drop pass, drop fail and incomplete). For example a sophomore that has attempted 60 credit hours and has satisfactorily completed 48 of those credit hours would have completed 80% of attempted credits. Any type of dropped courses (including drop pass), incompletes or failing grades will have a negative impact on a student’s financial aid eligibility.
In addition, students will also have to meet a minimum GPA criteria:
Students with 1 to 29 earned credits – must have a cumulative GPA of 1.70
Students with 30 to 59 earned credits – must have a cumulative GPA of 1.80
Students with 60 to 89 earned credits – must have a cumulative GPA of 2.00
Students with 90 or greater earned credits – must have a cumulative GPA of 2.00
Graduate Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00.
Maximum Time Frame?
Students are also required by federal regulation to complete their degree in a limited number of credit hours.
Undergraduate students must complete their degree in 180 attempted credit hours.
Students enrolled in a Masters program have a maximum of 63 attempted credit hours in order to complete Master's degree requirements. Students attempting a 2nd Masters degree are allowed 45 attempted credit hours.
Students enrolled in a Doctoral program have a maximum of 99 attempted credit hours in order to complete the Doctoral degree requirements.
